USAT To Adopt New Wetsuit Rules In 2013 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Baker
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:33

USAT is going to disallow wetsuits thicker than 5mm beginning in 2013.  Anyone wearing one will be disqualified from USAT-sanctioned events.

-------------

Following extensive research and consideration, USA Triathlon announced today that beginning in 2013 use of wetsuits exceeding five millimeters in thickness will not be permitted at USAT-sanctioned events. The new regulation, which falls under Article 4.4 Wetsuits of the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules, states: "Effective January 1, 2013, any swimmer wearing a wetsuit with a thickness measured in any part greater than five millimeters shall be disqualified." "Our board has been considering this issue and the impact it might have with our  athletes for some time," said USA Triathlon CEO Skip Gilbert. "The overall feeling is that it makes perfect sense to align with the guidelines set by our international federation and multisport enthusiasts around the world. This is a standard that is good for the athlete community and our sport overall." By implementing this rule change, USA Triathlon falls in line with the international standard of five millimeters recognized by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) and other National Governing Bodies.

The adoption of this rule is designed to eliminate any competitive advantage gained by enhancements in wetsuit technology in recent years. Studies have shown there is a marked and measurable performance benefit to the use of certain wetsuits, specifically added buoyancy effectively reducing passive drag. These performance benefits have led to an increased, and artificially induced, reduction in physical demand required during the swim leg of a triathlon and an increase in speed. USAT recognizes that there may be wetsuits currently available on the market that are greater than five millimeters in thickness. Consequently, the organization has implemented a phase-in period of the rule to allow the use of wetsuits that currently do not meet the thickness requirement. This announcement of the new regulation serves as notice that the rule change will come into effect in 2013. USAT recently solicited feedback on the wetsuit thickness issue from its certified race directors via a comprehensive survey. The majority of those surveyed supported USA Triathlon's adoption of this rule.

Earlier Starts For Saturday Group Rides? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Baker

Some were wondering if it might be beneficial to depart earlier from Barrington High School for the Saturday group rides to beat the heat and the traffic.  Presently, the group meets at 10AM, departing at 10:30AM.  It has been suggested that an 8AM (or even earlier) start would be better for the group. If you fall into the "early" category, feel free to post to the website in the forums section to indicate when you'd like to depart.

We want to wish all Ytri members competing at Mattoon, Batavia, Naperville, and Lake In The Hills this weekend good luck!

We have first-time triathletes jumping into open water with wetsuits, consummate competitors looking to fine-tune their craft, and veterans fighting back from injury.  Everyone has worked really hard and should be confident that all that time on the bike, in the water, and on the roads — even running around EAD carrying a medicine ball – will pay off!

Be sure to submit your race results to Warren Dawkins (see the Race Results and Reports section of the website for details).

Race season is officially here!

Open Water Swim Clinic Sign-Up Begins Tomorrow At 6AM PDF Print E-mail

Sign-up for Saturday, June 12th's open water swim clinic will start at 6AM tomorrow (Friday).  We have been asked to cap it to 25 participants and we'll need final numbers by Tuesday evening at 8PM, so be sure to secure your spot if you are interested.

Cost is $40 cash - bring it with you to the lake.

U.S. Master Swimmers Tom Ujiiye and AJ Block will conduct the clinic at Lake Zurich from 6:30 - 8:30AM.  Meet at the Oakwood Beach Club near Breezewald Park.

As of 5PM Tuesday, the water temperature was 83 degrees, so it's warm enough without a wetsuit, but always keep an eye on the weather. Bring a wetsuit (your own or a rental), towel, and warm clothing just in case.  In the case of inclement weather, the clinic will be on Sunday the 13th.

The clinic is an ideal opportunity for beginning triathletes to try out open water swimming.  Topics to be discussed include: drafting, sighting, passing, pacing, navigating currents, dealing with sun and other elements, pre-race strategy, race anxiety, exiting the water and dealing with "the pack." After the discussion, we will get in the water and practice open water swimming.  Just like riding on the road being the perfect preparation for race riding, so is open-water swimming good preparation for race swimming!  Getting acclimated to the water temperature and the lack of visibility are just some of the things you will need to get used to.
